Philip-Lorca diCorcia Biography

1951-

Known for his formally staged photographs of seemingly offhand scenes a viewer feels he has wandered into, diCorcia attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, then graduated with a master’s degree from Yale.  His often-unknown subject’s presence is integral to his imagery; one becomes a voyeur who happens on a tableau eliciting variable responses — the spontaneity and anonymity of a Rorschach test.  “So Baroque and cinematic is the stagecraft here that diCorcia rigged a flashbulb in the fridge so it would go off just at the instant the door opened,” wrote art commentator Marlena Donohue.
