1947-

It has been observed that Julian Lethbridge’s paintings make time stand still in the sense of inviting closer examination of surface detail; his rhythmic buildup of paint and use of hard gloss and raised edges to form a topography and his extraction of a subject from the whole make him one of the better articulators of abstraction today.  His interlocking patterns show an indebtedness to Jasper Johns, yet they also show Lethbridge’s interest in exploratory paints, physicalities and process.  Lethbridge was schooled at Winchester College and Cambridge University.  His works appear in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
