Duane Michals Biography

Born 1932

Duane Michals began making photographic sequences in the ’60s, having been self-taught in photography.  He studied art at the University of Denver and the Parsons School of Design, became assistant art director for Dance Magazine and later photographed commercially for other publications.  The sense of action, evolution and development captured in sequences is what established him in a generation of social landscapists.  His progressions are tender portrayals of interactivity, often enhanced by the inclusion of his own handwritten commentary.
