Vik Muniz

Vik Muniz Biography

Vik Muniz refers to himself as an illusionist, rearranging perceptions to probe their underpinnings.  For his Pictures of Clouds series, a skywriter drew clouds in the sky, which the Brazilian born artist then photographed in various stages of disintegration.  Originally trained as a sculptor, he has meticulously reworked masterpiece paintings in chocolate, a subliminal absurdist commentary.  Muniz states of his Pictures of Dust series:  “Dust is pieces of hair and skin.  I think people scratch their heads a lot in museums; that gets mixed with the residue from the artworks themselves.  That’s the ultimate bond between the museum visitor and the artwork.”  His work is in the public collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Neue Galerie, Graz.
