Richard Misrach graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. His series Desert Canto — a thirty-year epic documentation, made from his Volkswagen bus of underground nuclear testing, desert fires rimmed with phantasmagorical color and geomorphic compositions of clouds, stones or plants — showcased his transcendent imagery and affirmed his place in art history.  His landmark Beach series, photographed with an 8 x 10 camera from a hotel balcony, depicts seemingly miscellaneous bathers.  “Maybe some of them are not so safe after all,” Misrach observes.  His work is included in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
