1963-

Pierre Gonnord was born in France, and has spent the last twenty years working primarily in Spain.  His portraiture is gaining international respect.  In 2008, his images were featured at Rencontres d’Arles, in an exhibition curated by Christian La Croix.  Although his subjects are people, his renderings leave the impression that they are metaphors for the weightiness of life, and those metaphors are measured by his subjects’ eyes.  There is a Velázquez-like nobility to his photographs.  The image in the Cohen Collection, Los Montayas, is of two brothers from a hardworking Gypsy family that wanders continuously through Catalonia and the southern extremes of France, an area very important to Gypsy culture.
