1887-1985

Marc Chagall moved from St. Petersburg to Paris in 1910 where he embraced the Cubist, Impressionist and Fauvist influences he studied.  Referring to his Belarusian folk themes and dreamscapes, he declared, “I am out to introduce a psychic shock into my painting, one that is always motivated by pictorial reasoning; that is to say, a fourth dimension.”  This effect is evident in his nude drawings, gazing forward and back – future to past – secured on a torqued fecund body.  Chagall also created famed public works testifying to persecution and war.
