Lucian Freud is considered one of the preeminent figure painters of his time. The subject of his paintings from the ’50s onward is the body’s encoding of signals.  Choosing portraiture subjects for “how they happen to be,” Freud allows nonverbal messages to flow through skin porosity, texture, posture, mass, comportment and facial attitude.  Called “the Ingres of Existentialism” by critic Herbert Read, Freud’s works often have a brooding sense and a brutal frankness about them.  His works can be found in permanent collections throughout the world, including the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and The Museum of Modern Art.
