Jill Mathis is from San Antonio, Texas where she studied photography at the University of Texas in San Antonio and Austin. After living in New York City for five years, four of which were spent as the full-time assistant to Ralph Gibson, she moved to Italy. Mathis currently lives in the lake region of Northern Italy with her husband, the sculptor, Valerio Tedeschi. She is now producing an extensive body of work based on etymology.
