1966-

Jeff Cowen is a photographer known for painterly photo murals, photo collages and street photography.  He attended Waseda University in Tokyo and was a University Honors Scholar in Oriental studies at New York University, where he studied photography with Elaine Mayes at the Tisch School.  His early images of prostitution in the meat district in New York City are in the permanent collection of the New York Historical Society.  Cowen’s images of the Romanian Revolution appeared on front pages around the world in such papers as The Guardian and the Tel Aviv Post.  He worked as assistant for photographers Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson.  Cowen then studied drawing and anatomy at the Art Students League of New York and the New York Studio School.  In 2001, he moved to Paris and is currently based in Berlin.  Cowen received the Thomas Cooke Award for Photography in 2004.
