BIOGRAPHY
1943-2012
After attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and Ohio State University, Jan Groover took a teaching position in painting at the University of Hartford. Her work consisted of minimalist abstractions. Photography, which she discovered in the late ’70s using a 4 x 5 camera, led to arrangements of everyday subject matter, particularly the Kitchen Still Life series. “With photography,” she said, “I didn’t have to make things up; everything was already there.” She developed a formalist style of photographing, using reflective metals to create painterly effects and illumination.
