Helmut Newton Biography

1920-2004

From the time he escaped Nazi Germany as a young man, there was danger, power and secrecy in the newly sexualized Helmut Newton’s life.  Converging elements – desire and guilt, seduction and shock, and sadomasochism tinged with eroticism – emerged in his photographic work.  Newton’s voyeuristic images of women – controlled but fully in control – seared into the public consciousness and cemented his place as a major photographer of the twentieth century.  He secured assignments from top publications worldwide and published several books, some in collaboration with his wife, June.
