Based on Long Island, Flo Kemp works in oils, but specializes in soft ground etchings that have a “painterly” effect. Kemp’s inspirations are land- and seascapes—scenes of local beaches and rural mountain areas. Her etchings are a form of intaglio printing—a process whereby a drawing is first executed on a zinc plate, which is then immersed in an acid bath until the acid cuts or etches a line. Everything is done by hand, and although an etching is a “multiple,” each proof is different in subtle ways, and so each proof is considered an original.

Kemp has received numerous awards, including Best of Show in 2 Dimensional Work at the prestigious Ann Arbor State Street Festival in July 2000. The 2001 January issue of the Journal of Forestry magazine featured a Flo Kemp etching on its cover. She was also selected to participate in the Arts in Embassies Program sponsored by the Department of State, with two of her etchings on display in the Embassy Gallery in Taipei from 2003-2006. Flo Kemp is an active member of the National Association of Women Artists and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in Manhattan.
