Dorothy Norman Biography

1905-1997

Dorothy Norman interacted with artists and engaged in the arts on many levels.  She wrote a New York Times column and edited and wrote several books, was mentored by Alfred Stieglitz (who became her lover) and maintained a well-respected artists’ salon.  By day, Norman managed Stieglitz’s renowned gallery, An American Place.  Her distinctive voice and sense of composition are notable in the seminal portrait of him.  Other subjects include those in her circle – among them, Indira Gandhi, Theodore Dreiser, John Cage and Lewis Mumford.  Norman’s work is in The Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Getty Museum of Art and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
