BIOGRAPHY
Born 1949
One of the world’s best-known photographers, Annie Leibovitz studied photography while a painting student at the San Francisco Art Institute. Rolling Stone hired her and gave her the assignment that symbolized her oeuvre, a cover portrait of John Lennon. Within a decade she had shot 142 covers, published scores of news photo essays and created ad campaigns before joining Vanity Fair and Vogue. Leibovitz fuels the celebrity drive to concoct public identities and participates in our quest to seek them out. Her free associations led to the staged settings that form her compositions.
