Nicholas Nixon Biography

Born 1947

American photographer. Born in Detroit, Nixon studied American literature at Michigan University. In 1974, the year he received an MFA from New Mexico University, he participated in the New Topographics exhibition at the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House. Working almost exclusively with a 20.3 × 25.4 cm (8 × 10 in) view camera and contact prints, Nixon is known for his extraordinary photographs of ordinary people: his family—including an ongoing series of his wife Bebe and her sisters—residents of nursing homes, nudes, AIDS sufferers, and the inhabitants of small towns and city neighborhoods.
