Hans-Christian Schink Biography

Born 1961

Hans-Christian Schink, born in Erfurt, Germany, lives and works in Leipzig.  He studied photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig and in 1993, he earned the distinction of Meisterschüler, or “master student.”  His work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad.

The sparse aesthetics of travel and transport routes are the primary focus of Schink’s art.  His photographs isolate segments and details of highways, bridges, and railways and scenes of their blandly reconstituted natural surroundings.  Simple and monumental at once, they are masterpieces of austerity and reduction.  These fragmentary images of concrete structures and artificially greened landscapes beneath milky-gray skies are heightened to symbolic intensity.
